This particular athlete went from a “former quarterback” who struggled to see a Leader in himself to a high NFL draft pick that led not only on his NFL team, but also in the community.

Not every player will become the captain or a Leader on the team. On those January and February recruiting weekends, I tell recruits that strength and conditioning goes beyond sport; that I want them to be the best overall leaders they can be, across all walks of life. Those young 18-year-olds will someday be leading their own families and to do so effectively they will need to draw upon everything they learned as an athlete.

I can think of no better place than the weight room, conditioning field, or gridiron to teach the skills necessary to impact this world in a positive way. In those environments, athletes have the opportunity to set goals, work to achieve them, deal with adversity, persevere, manage success, and collaborate with others.

You may never know who the Leaders of your team will be. Heck, like in this case, they may not even know themselves. However, if you challenge each athlete to become the best version of him or herself that they can be, you will often get exactly what you are looking for.
